Get introduced to the basics of stand-up comedy and the jargon of the comedic industry before jumping into the deep end with your very own mini comedy set. Day 3: Tuesday - Delivery and Controlling a Room

Learn to write a strong open to your comedy set. Tonight students will also have the opportunity to refine some of their own writing, and learn about the open mic circuit, the Australian comedy festivals, such as Adelaide Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festivals, as well as life after graduation, with a visit from our returning alumnus, Mazz Matta.

Cliche it may be, but I think I've always wanted to do stand up.That feeling of making a group of people laugh is something that has never left me after sacrificing my education to become the best class clown I could be.It's taken me 43 years to decide to get back up and be that clown again. How on earth do you do that?Well that's where good ole Google came in and brought me to the School of Hard Knock Knocks.A quick chat with a bot, that turned out to be Morry Morgan, and I was booked in to a Melbourne course.Sh*t it was fun....I needed a bit more insight into how comedy works, how to write and present it, I needed a little support and SHKK give me that. Post course, that support is still there, in fact it's grown. Basically, SHKK did exactly what it says on the box, and so much more.Where else are you going to get industry insights from seasoned professionals willingly giving away years of experience?I don't regret hooking up with these guys for one minute, I doubt anyone could.Oh and did I mention it was fun?Sh*t it was fun....

Like everyone reading this review, I too had been contemplating doing stand-up comedy for years, but never got around to doing it. Then I did this comedy course in Adelaide and IT CHANGED MY LIFE. The four day course was exactly what I needed to get started on the journey that is Stand-up comedy. Even if becoming a pro comic is not your goal, the skill to be able to tell jokes on stage, is something everyone will benefit from. School of Hard Knocks Knocks is the best $$$ you will ever spend. Since doing the course I have gone on to be the RAW state finalist, done my own Fringe shows, performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and guess what, I have even been paid by the School Of Hard Knock Knocks to perform multiple times. Stop thinking, just do the bloody course!

Brilliant experience; provided all the skills necessary to write stand-up and opportunity to deliver at a last night performance. Very supportive facilitators and peer group.I undertook the course whilst holidaying in Melbourne from UK to celebrate my 50th birthday and this experience absolutely made the holiday for me!

Doing the course was an amazing experience and we were in great hands with Nathan and Brad. The course is designed to get you comfortable with performing on stage, and most importantly, the mindset around how to improve at standup. The other graduates I met were also incredible and made the experience that much more memorable. Highly recommended.

Meet Your Comedy Coaches

Resident Comedy Coach - Brad Oakes

Brad Oakes Comedian

The resident comedy coach is responsible for moving our nervous nobodies into confident comedians, throughout the five night course. This month the resident comedy coach is veteran comedian Brad Oakes. Brad is considered by many to be comedy royalty, and has over 29 years of stand-up comedy experience. He has performed on Australian classic comedy shows, which include The Comedy Company, Jimeoin, Full Frontal, and Hey Hey It’s Saturday. Learn more about his career by listening to his podcast interview.

Celebrity Guest Comedian - Lehmo

Comedian LehmoThe School of Hard Knock Knocks is not only about learning the skills required to become a stand-up comedian, but also connecting with some of Australia's most accomplished comedians and learning first hand how they overcame challenges and built their stand-up comedy career. Each month we invite a celebrity stand-up comedian to coach and perform with our students. In August we welcome the amazing Lehmo, one of Australia’s favourite comedians – both on stage and on TV. Star on Utopia, That’s Not My Dog, and a regular on The Project, Lehmo’s comedy naturally dabbles in satire, showmanship, and current affairs. He’s also one of my favourite Aussie comedians, making this last show of 2018 all that extra special. Listen to his podcast interview.

Returning Alumnus - Mazz Matta

At each course we pay a previous graduate (alumni) to perform at the School of Hard Knock Knocks graduation. This is how we give back to the community, and ensure that post-graduation our students continue learning. We also pay our students to perform at Punchlines Comedy Club in Port Melbourne, Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. This month the returning alumna is Mazz Matta, a very funny man in his own right, and also the brother of US comedian, Maher Matta.
